Wutai

Wutai is Yuffie's parochial hometown. It is located to the far west of the Planet, on a mountainous strip of land. The town is pretty isolated from the rest of the world, as it is the only existing town on its continent. This has a major influence on the people of Wutai: The citizens are very conventional, traditional people who stay true to their religion and culture no matter what.

Mainly, watergods are worshipped in Wutai. The most important and main one is Da-Chao. A large statue has been carved of Da-Chao in the mountain-trail rocks of Wutai. It is widely believed in Wutai that Da-Chao protects Wutai as long as the people keep praying to him.

Mount Wutai
The town of Wutai has been based on Mount Wutai, a real existing mountain located in China. Mount Wutai is a sacred place with a prestigious history, significant to Chinese Buddhism. It has a lot of things in common with FF7's Wutai.

First of all, Mount Wutai is actually a cluster of five terrace-like peaks. This explains its name, Wutai (Five Terraces). The five-floored pagoda in FF7's Wutai has been created with this in mind.

Then, there's the Watergod Da-Chao. The moutain range in which Mount Wutai is located was one of the mass burial sites containing corpses and bones of Chinese who died in the bloody Nanjing Massacre committed by the Japanese Army. Dao Chao was one of the seventeen monks that were killed on the 13th of December in 1937, at the Zhengjue temple.
